Aurora, Illinois, shooting: Investigation into alleged gunman’s past, motives
Authorities will resume their investigation into the deadly shooting in Aurora, Illinois, on Saturday after a gunman sprayed bullets into a massive warehouse, killing at least five people and injuring six police officers. The gunman, identified as Gary Montez Martin, 45, was shot and killed by police during an afternoon gun battle at the Henry Pratt Company, officials said. According to authorities, Martin had been told that he was being let go from work just before the shooting began. Aurora Police Chief Kristen Ziman said Martin used a Smith & Wesson handgun and were looking into whether Martin had obtained the gun legally.
McCabe talks Trump controversies on ’60 Minutes’
Appearing on “60 Minutes” this Sunday (CBS, 7 p.m. ET/PT), former acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe will offer an insider’s view of controversies involving President Donald Trump. According to interviewer Scott Pelley, McCabe said Justice Department officials weighed asking the Cabinet to consider invoking the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from office in the wake of his 2017 firing of then-FBI chief James Comey. McCabe has publicly denounced his own March 2018 firing by then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions as a “war on the FBI” by the president. McCabe’s appearance on the CBS news show precedes the release of his book, “The Threat: How the FBI Protects America in the Age of Terror and Trump.”
Daytona 500 kicks off NASCAR’s season
The lineup is set for Sunday’s Daytona 500, the iconic Florida event that kicks off NASCAR’s Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. William Byron starts in the pole position of the 2.5-mile oval, followed by his Hendrick Motorsports teammates Alex Bowman, Kevin Harvick and Joey Logano, The last two got their slots by winning the Gander RV Duel qualifying races, with Ford Mustangs — a car making its Daytona 500 debut — taking the top 3 of each Duel race. Harvick, the only one of last season’s “Big 3” who has ever won Daytona, definitely faces competition from the other two, Kyle Busch and Marin Truex Jr., in NASCAR’s most prestigious and chaotic race.
End of era: Payless ShoeSource to start liquidation sales
Days after a report predicted more store closings in 2019, Payless ShoeSource confirmed Friday it would close all of its 2,100 stores in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, and shutter its website. Liquidation sales will begin Sunday, which is the same day the fate of another struggling retailer, Charlotte Russe, could be determined. Earlier this month, the women’s clothing retailer announced it would close 94 stores as part of its bankruptcy and said in a court filing that if it doesn’t find a buyer by Sunday it plans to liquidate the rest of its more than 500 stores.
The discount shoe retailer Payless ShoeSource is set to close all of its stores when its files for bankruptcy later this month. Veuer’s Mercer Morrison has the story.

Stars align for NBA’s All-Star Weekend
With the trade deadline in the rear-view mirror, all eyes will be on Charlotte this weekend for the NBA’s All-Star festivities. While the action began Friday night with the Celebrity and Rising Stars games, the real fun takes place Saturday and Sunday. All-Star Saturday Night (8 p.m. ET, TNT) begins with the Skills Challenge, moves on to the Three-Point Contest and ends with the high-flying Slam Dunk Contest. Then Sunday night, Team LeBron takes on Team Giannis in the 68th All-Star Game (8 p.m. ET, TNT).
